Hostages Experience

By Emily Cohn

Going into the first All American High School Film Festival, I had no idea what to expect, but by the end of the first day, I was completely blown away and honored to be a part of something that felt so perfect. How did this not exist until this year?! The whole event was programmed beautifully, offering something new and exciting for everyone: the college fair, panel discussions, and, of course, the film screenings in the AMC Theaters in Time Square – all culminating in the super classy award ceremony.

For me, and a handful of other filmmakers, the excitement didn’t stop there. My film, Pierced, won for best drama and there were a ton of awesome prizes. I got Chipotle and AMC gift cards and a copy of Final Draft, the screenwriting program (which I’ve already gotten a lot of use out of!) and Director’s Cut, the editing software. On top of all these amazing/insanely useful prizes, I was invited to attend a private screening and insider critique of all the winning films for the filmmakers at the Soho House in NYC.

BUT….yes, it keeps on going. On top of ALL of that, I also won an experience on the TV set of Hostages

host.jpg

I went on their last day of shooting—energy was high and I could feel the kind of familial bond that had built between the cast and crew over the season. Everyone was welcoming and enthusiastic, answering my questions and curious about my film and how I ended up on set. After a few minutes I wound up in the producer’s chair, right behind Jeffrey Nachmanoff, the creator of the show, and Seth Copans, the script supervisor with a head set of my own and a perfect view of the monitors. Dylan McDermott, the show’s star, came over to check in and see how everything was going as other actors paced around and the crew worked to flip the set. I loved seeing how the set operated like a well-oiled machine. While I’ve experienced filmmaking on a much smaller scale, it was awesome to see how many people it takes to get the scene as perfect as possible and how everyone must work together toward that common goal.

Most of all, it just looked like a lot of fun. At one point I remember going up to Brian, a member of the AAHSFF team who’d taken me to the set, and saying that I felt like I should be helping out—I wanted to join in on the excitement. One day, fingers crossed, I’ll be able to have this excitement of my own. Until then, I encourage everyone to get involved with the AAHSFF, it was an incredibly rewarding and unforgettable experience all around.

Category winners in attendance were treated to a private screening at the SoHo House in downtown Manhattan with award winning filmmaker Andrew Jenks.

Every winner took home between $150 and $300 in fandango gift cards!

MTV Act will play the best PSA on their website.
