2024 High Line Photo Walk Challenge

Welcome to the 2024 Photo Walk Challenge taking place on The High Line! This is the official kick-off event of our festival weekend: Your chance to explore a unique and magical New York City landmark while testing your creative photography talents. And, just like the High Line, our 2024 “challenge” is FREE! Even better, for everyone joining us on the Opening Night Dinner Cruise, you can hop off the High Line at 23rd Street (wheelchair accessible via elevator) to board the boat at Chelsea Pier 61.

The Challenge: Explore the wonderful diversity of the Highline’s architecture, art, and natural landscapes while capturing the experience with your camera.

2024 Thematic Focus:  

The High Line is a microcosm of the rich diversity, abundant imagery and undeniable magic found all over New York City. For our 2024 High Line Photo Challenge we ask that you submit THREE photos that capture your unique experience and perspective of this iconic landmark. We can't wait to see what NYC looks like through your lens!

How to Submit:  

On FilmFreeway, create a photography project, fill out the forms, upload your amazing photos, and submit to the specific challenge when it goes live.

Submissions Open: Friday, November 1st, 2024

Deadline: Friday, November 15th, 2024 at 11:59PM EST

Winners will be announced live on Instagram at 8pm EST on Thursday, November 21st!

 
 

Where: 

You can walk/explore the Highline and the suggested stops by entering from either the north or south (Begin at the 14th Street Passage - A covered passageway located between 14th and 15th St. Accessed via the staircase at 14th St. and 10th Ave. OR begin at the 30th St. Hudson Yards entrance, via the staircase/ramp at 30th St. and 10th Ave.

This route will ensure opportunities to see some of the Highline’s most memorable landmarks! Of course, if you want to keep walking and exploring, go for it! The Highline extends for several blocks in both directions.

Rules and Guidelines:

IMPORTANT: Student participants will be representing their school, community, and AAHSFF while taking photos on the High Line. We expect all participants to conduct themselves in a professional manner and to show respect to the historic shoot locations as well as the great people of NYC. 

  • You may shoot on either a smartphone, digital camera or traditional camera (or any combination of these devices).

  • You can take as many photos as you wish at each official stop and throughout your walk on the High Line. However, you will only submit 3 photos (one photo for each prompt). 

  • Submissions will be open directly following the competition via our website hsfilmfest.com under the “competitions” tab. 

  • There are no restrictions for editing submission photos, but keep in mind that often, less is more.

  • All photos must be submitted as JPEG files specifically titled in the following format:

    • FullName_Photo1.JPEG

    • FullName_Photo2.JPEG

    • FullName_Photo3.JPEG

  • Our judges will select one winning photographer (based on the collection of all 3 photos).

  • Our judges will evaluate submissions based on the following criteria:

    • Communication/Expression of the overall theme

    • Originality/Creativity

    • Sense of Story

    • Overall Artistic Impression

      • Composition/Design

      • Color, Lighting, Exposure, and Focus

    • Entertainment/Wow Factor!

  • The Prize: The winner will receive a comprehensive prize package including:

    • Featured placement on all festival social media channels.

    • A festival swag package.

    • Bragging rights!!!
